Upside down auto totaled such a sad but great financial loss

I hit a dead deer in the road on my way home last night it was no way to avoid hitting it. My car from the looks of it according to the repair shop its totaled. I'm completely at loss as I don't have another vehicle to drive after my 30 day rental is up. However, the car is only worth about $5,000 and as you can see on my side bar I owe $12k. I'm very glad that I selected the gap option when I purchased the car. Now I have no money to buy a new car and now don't want to finance a vehicle at all. What do you do taking public transportation isn't an option as I have to drive on the beltway every morning. My job isn't in the city so its not on the bus line.

    That kind of accident is frightening and can kill you. We had a case recently where the deer went through the windshield, seriously injured the driver and the passenger, and then the deer smashed out the back window. I am so glad you are safe and sound. Way more important than the money or the inconvenience.

    BTW, you side bar is showing amazing progress. Congratulations. You really are an inspiration.

    bicycle? taxi? rideshare? pay a co-worker to drive you? move close to work so you can take bus, walk, or ride bike?

    But OMG. Are you hurt?

    It sounds like you are okay! That is so important.

    Borrow or rent a car from someone who has an extra...ask around. Maybe someone would drive you to and from work for pay or barter...PatientSaver does that for someone.

    Is there something you can sell to have a downpayment for another car. I suggest buying used, rather than brand new...it will just depreciate as you drive it off the lot.

    Whoa, I thought you meant the car TURNED upside down. That happened on the road outside our window last night, so I guess it was in my mind. Still, a very scary thing and an unexpected new challenge.

    Ditto on trying to sell something for a downpayment and getting a used car that won't depreciate as much, and will be faster to pay off. After all, the great thing about this is that your car debt is wiped out, right?

    Definitely ask around. You just never know who wants to sell a car. And have your friends ask their friends.

    Glad you are ok! I can sympathize with your situation. I don't know what I would do if my car was totaled. Good thing you had the gap insurance!

    My middle daughter fought a "total" on her 2000 Accord as it was not paid off yet and what they offered was not enough. She was broadsided. Honestly I am not sure how she did it, but the insurance company ended up fixing her car. That was 8 years ago and she is still driving it (though it is on it's last legs).

    Maybe you could do the same?

    Well, do NOT try to ride the deer. Wink Glad you are OK! It's good that you had the gap insurance on there, or it could really lead to a huge problem. Good luck finding a suitable replacement!
